A PASSION FOR NATURE: Chinese Paintings by Artist Su Fung-nan
On View February 7 through September 29, 2007
The Pacific Heritage Museum presents an exhibition of 56 Chinese ink-and-brush paintings by the artist Su Fung-nan. His works are characterized by beautiful calligraphic lines and expressive qualities.

Su grew up in Taiwan, a place with majestic mountain ranges surrounded by the sea. This surrounding is a main source of inspiration for Su who skillfully extracts the essence of the mountains and the sea in his paintings. Flowers and insects are also important subject matters in his paintings as Su lived in the countryside as a child. One could experience Su's eulogy of nature and life through his work. Every stroke and every touch represents his personal feelings for what he sees and experiences.

Su Fung-nan was among the first graduates of the National Taiwan University of Arts in 1965. He has served as Professor and Head of the Department of Fine Arts and of the Department of Chinese Calligraphy and Painting of his Alma Mater. With an already solid background in Chinese art, Su furthered his studies in the Academy of Art University of San Francisco. After receiving a MFA degree, Su returned to his teaching position in Taiwan with a greater understanding of both Eastern and Western art and culture, as well as a wider range of painting subjects and styles.

The works of Su Fung-nan fully represent the development of Chinese painting in Taiwan for the last fifty years. His continuous efforts in creating, educating, and researching Chinese art have made him one the most influential people in the field of Chinese painting in Taiwan.

The exhibition is co-sponsored by United Commercial Bank, the Council for Cultural Affairs Executive Yuan, Taiwan, The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in San Francisco, World Journal, and EVA Airways.
